About Seth Moniz
You don’t have to look far to see where Seth Moniz’s surfing prowess comes from—the Moniz family tree is full of world-class talent.
Born and raised in Honolulu on Oahu’s South Shore, the youngest of five children was bred for a life in the water. Having surfed Pipeline since a young age, he’s just as comfortable in heavy waves of consequence as he is in punchy beach breaks. And that shouldn’t come as a surprise given that the patriarch of the family is standout 1980’s power surfer, Tony Moniz.
One look at Seth and it’s easy to tell that he’s carved from the same stone as his old man. The young Hawaiian has been able to harness his natural strength and, unfortunately for his fellow competitors, use it to mold into one of the most well-rounded surfers to come out of Hawaii in years.
After a successful amateur career in the National Scholastic Surfing Association (NSSA) and Juniors ranks that included a win at the Sunset Beach Pro Jr. in 2015, Seth catapulted onto the world stage during 2018, his first full year on the World Qualifying Series (WQS). During his Round 5 heat of the 2018 U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach, he launched an inverted, backside full-rotation air into the flats, riding out of it to thunderous applause from the thousands of spectators. He ended up finishing with 5th place at the ever-important 6-star event that eventually helped him qualify for the following year’s Championship Tour.
But if you thought first-year jitters would get a hold of a determined Seth Moniz, you were wrong. His impressive rookie year included multiple 9th place finishes, two 5ths, and a 3rd earning him the 2019 Rookie of the Year. His sophomore year in 2021 wasn’t quite as spectacular, his best result being a Quarterfinal, but he did just enough to secure his CT berth. With a full 11 events and an abundance of quality waves on the calendar, you’d expect him to be rattling surfing’s top cage for years to come.
