Featuring a mix of Championship Tour (CT) icons with Qualifying Series (QS) surfers climbing the ranks, the contest offers a chance not only to go toe-to-toe with the world's best, but also a wealth of rankings points. The event is a QS10000 (formerly called a Prime, now named for its points offering), the most prestigious and valuable event type on the QS. For QS surfers who do well at Lowers, that means a solid step toward potential qualification for the CT in 2016. For CT surfers who do well, it's part of an insurance policy that allows them to requalify with their QS standings -- not to mention get some practice for the punchy beachbreak at the Oi Rio Pro.
The Oakley Lowers Pro is also a chance for a few talented up-and-comers to take center stage. Prior to the main event, Oakley ran surf trials, in which Thiago Camarão (BRA) and Ezekiel Lau (HAW) surfed to the front of the pack. Each was awarded a coveted spot in the QS10000.
"It's so great to have Lowers back on the QS Qualifying Series schedule," Camarão said. "It's such a performance wave and it doesn't need much swell to be super rippable. Very thankful to be into the main event."
