Lanzarote Serves Up Pumping Surf on Day 2 of Franito Pro Junior

The Teguise 2015 Franito Pro Junior resumed on Day 2 in pumping four-to-six foot surf peeling down perfectly along the San Juan point and offered idyllic conditions for Europe's best Juniors to showcase their surfing repertoire.

Guilherme Fonseca (PRT) 18, led the show with a convincing performance in Heat 4. The young Portuguese made wave selection his priority and selected the bombs to perform combinations of power maneuvers. Opting for quality over quantity, Fonseca took maximum risks to find himself in the radical sections of the wave.

"It was a good heat, the waves were pumping," Fonseca stated. "Those are dream conditions and I went out there just to have fun and enjoy myself basically. I made a couple of good turns with some flow and I hope to do even better in the next heats. I was lost in the lineup at first when I got here, but I sought assistance with some locals and they explained to me how to spot the right waves, those that will wall up nicely down the reef."

Local hero Yeray Ferrera (CNY) 20, had the beach in awe of his round 2 heroics, besting Portuguese powerhouse Miguel Blanco (PRT) to make his way into the third day of competition. At home on the shallow reef of San Juan, Ferrera managed to spot the best sections and collected an excellent 8.63 on his way to a maiden heat win on home turf.

"I couldn't find the peak where I usually sit as the conditions were a bit tricky," Ferrera admitted. "But the waves were fun and I'm super happy to get through. I've surfed this wave for ever and train here so for me it's perfect to have an event on this very spot. It's the first time I make a heat out here and I hope to make a couple more."

Diego Mignot (FRA) 19, continued on his path to success in Lanzarote, advancing ahead of current form surfer - and cousin - Nomme Mignot (FRA) 18 into the third round of competition.

"It's another fine heat, I could probably have taken a bit more risks but it was fun and I'm happy with my performance," Diego Mignot said. "It's really cool to surf with Nomme, especially when we both get through. I'm stoked to get one over him now, I had a knee injury earlier in the year and am just getting back to my best level now and Nomme's been on fire lately. It would be amazing to finish here with a bang, as it's my last season in the juniors."

Yael Peña (CNY) 15, a young surfer hailing from the nearby island of Tenerife, put on a solid heat to make his way into the third round and fly the Canarian flag high on the second day of competition in Teguise.

"It was fun, I got a couple of waves and made some good turns so I'm happy," Peña said. "I'm from Tenerife but I come here sometimes and have surfed this wave quite a few times. This season I only surfed a couple of events but next season I'll do the whole tour, I have two more years to surf in the Juniors."

The event will resume on Friday with a 10 a.m. call for both men and women for an expectedly great day of competition in Lanzarote.
