Greg Long, San Clemente, California, USA.
Big Wave Tour ranking: No. 3
Greg Long is a perennial performer in all aspects of big-wave surfing, whether it be competing in the Big Wave Tour events, discovering and surfing new big-wave spots around the globe, or being a part of some of the biggest sessions in the world. He is consistently in the mix when it comes to the big stuff, and has been an incredible ambassador for the sport.
He was also the Big Wave World Champion in 2012 and 2015, and has consistently made it to the finals at the biggest events over the years. Last season alone, Greg racked up a second place at the Puerto Escondido Challenge, a second place at the Pe'ahi Challenge, and was a first round casualty in the Nazaré Challenge, giving him a good run of points and prize money for the season.
"It is always an honor to be selected as one of the performers of the year," said Greg. "For me, that is the most difficult category to win as it takes more than just a single ride, but rather years' worth of hard work and dedication while being a standout wherever you go."
As one of the pioneers of the sport, Long knows where the sport sits in the surfing world right now, and how the athletes involved are making it work. "The one thing I am most happy about in big-wave surfing at the moment," he said, "is the level of professionalism that is being adopted by those those who are truly dedicated and passionate about the sport.
"This includes serious training both in and out of the water, as well as having thoughtful safety plans in place during each of the sessions. I think this is going to continue to allow those at the forefront to continue pushing the level of performance on the biggest of days."
