The Krui Pro called the men off for the day and ran through four heats of the women's Round 2, locking in the eight Quarterfinalists. Ujung Bocur continued to deliver nice conditions in the two-to-four foot range and is expected to turn up the energy and intensity over the next three days, so competition was called off to wait for better surf.
There's excitement in the air at the Krui Pro as reigning two-time WSL World Champion Gabriel Medina has arrived as a last minute wildcard into the draw. Medina was spending time in Bali in the lead up the Corona Bali Protected WSL Championship Tour event and when he saw the quality of waves on offer and the forecasted epic waves for the next three days and he couldn't resist coming here to compete.
"I am so happy to be here in Krui," Medina said. "I just had my first surf and the wave is super fun. I saw the forecast for the next three days is really good -- so I can't wait to surf in the event."
Indonesia's Taina Izquierdo took an impressive win to earn a Quarterfinal spot with some really smooth and stylish turns and hooks. Izquierdo will now take on Japan's Julie Nishimoto in the Quarterfinals when competition resumes.
"I am so happy right now!" Izquierdo said. "I've lost in the first heat at this event for the last two years, so making the Quarters is big for me. I really love this place, the waves and the town is amazing. I just hope I have another heat like that in the Quarters."
Nadia Erostarbe from the Basque Country scored the single highest wave of the women's event -- 8.57 out of a possible 10 to easily advance into the Quarterfinals. Erostarbe seamlessly linked powerful turns on big sections and looks like she's developing a great relationship with the waves here at Ujung Bocur.
"I am having the best time here in Krui," Erostarbe said. "This wave seems to suit my surfing and it makes competing so much fun. We don't always get waves like this in competitions, so I am just trying my best to enjoy every minute."
Keala Tomoda-Bannert advanced into the Quarters alongside last year's event winner Alyssa Cooper who finished second in the heat. Tomoda-Bannert has been one of the standout surfers in competition and during the free-surfs. Unfortunately USA's Elle Sampiere injured her ribs and had to come in mid-way through the heat.
"It's only rated a QS1,000, but there's so many good surfers here in this event," Tomoda-Bannert said. "That heat was intense, all of the surfers had good scores and unfortunately Elle Sampiere got injured. I tried to ask if she was okay, but she just went in, I hope she's okay. I can wait for the next few days because the forecast looks like we will get some big waves."
The 2019 Krui Pro has six day window with excellent surf predicted on the forecast. You can watch all of the action LIVE via worldsurfleague.com or on the WSL App.
