Uma maratona de dezenove baterias disputadas desde as 8h00 até as 17h30 na quarta-feira de boas ondas de 3-5 pés na Praia de Maresias, para as principais estrelas do Oi HD São Paulo Open of Surfing estrearem no QS 10000 de São Sebastião apresentado pelo Banco do Brasil. Todos os sete integrantes da "seleção brasileira" do CT passaram para a segunda fase. O potiguar Italo Ferreira fez um novo recorde de 17,33 pontos e o campeão mundial Gabriel Medina, o defensor do título desta etapa, Filipe Toledo, e Miguel Pupo, também venceram suas baterias, enquanto Adriano de Souza e Jadson André passaram em segundo nas suas. Só Wiggolly Dantas acabou eliminado no último confronto do dia, já pela segunda fase da competição que prossegue até domingo na praia mais badalada do litoral norte paulista.

"Estou surfando mais relaxado, sem pressão nenhuma e consegui pegar umas ondas boas na bateria, então espero manter esse ritmo até o final. As esquerdas estão favorecendo os aéreos, o vento está facilitando executar esse tipo de manobra, então eu apostei nos aéreos e deu tudo certo", disse Italo, que tirou nota 9,33 num dos voos mais altos do dia para totalizar imbatíveis 17,33 pontos. Foi justamente na etapa de São Sebastião que o potiguar garantiu sua classificação para o CT no ano passado e agora chega como o melhor estreante na divisão de elite da World Surf League. "Eu tenho me dedicado muito ao Circuito Mundial e estou muito feliz que os resultados estão aparecendo. Eu só quero mesmo aproveitar esse momento e continuar fazendo o meu trabalho da melhor maneira".
O terceiro dia do Oi HD São Paulo Open of Surfing começou com uma dobradinha australiana vencida pela novidade já confirmada no CT do ano que vem, o bicampeão mundial Pro Junior, Jack Freestone. Na briga pela segunda vaga da bateria, Cooper Chapman despachou o sul-africano Michael February e um dos concorrentes diretos pelas quatro últimas vagas na lista dos dez indicados pelo Qualifying Series para a elite dos top-34 da World Surf League, Evan Geiselman. O norte-americano ocupava a 21.a posição no ranking que está classificando até o 12.o colocado, o australiano Stu Kennedy, também já eliminado da competição.

"Eu odeio disputar a primeira bateria do dia, é muito ruim porque você não está 100% acordado e pronto pra competir ainda", disse Jack Freestone, que também vai abrir a quinta-feira, na quinta bateria da segunda fase com o também australiano Thomas Woods, o sul-africano Beyrick De Vries e o jovem paulista Samuel Pupo. "A maré estava bem cheia e acho que a bancada (de areia) que estamos surfando fica melhor na maré seca. As ondas estão fechando um pouco, mas ainda tem umas boas lá fora. Eu tenho aprendido bastante nos últimos anos. Antes, eu disputava várias baterias pensando que iam ser fáceis e perdia, mas agora eu entro com outra mentalidade e vem dando certo".
CAMPEÃO MUNDIAL - O irmão mais jovem do top do CT, Miguel Pupo, que vai competir com Jack Freestone no primeiro confronto da quinta-feira, previsto para iniciar as 7h30 na Praia de Maresias, foi uma das surpresas do terceiro dia do Oi HD São Paulo Open of Surfing. Ele venceu o Nossolar Trials na segunda-feira e completou a bateria de estreia do campeão mundial Gabriel Medina. Os dois acertaram bons aéreos para fazer uma dobradinha brasileira sobre dois surfistas que tinham chances de entrar na zona de classificação para o CT em São Sebastião, o australiano Mitch Crews e o marroquino Ramzi Boukhiam.

"A bateria foi muito difícil e só em estar em casa, ter ganho o Trials, já foi muito especial pra mim. Mas, espero continuar avançando no campeonato", disse o participante mais jovem do QS 10000 de São Sebastião, Samuel Pupo, de apenas 15 anos de idade. "O Miguel (Pupo) já tinha falado pra mim que numa etapa importante assim todos entram nas baterias com muita raça, todos querem vencer, mas estou aqui pra me divertir. Eu não tenho pressão nenhuma por resultados, então estou aqui só pra mostrar o meu surfe".
O campeão mundial Gabriel Medina também saiu feliz do mar pela vitória e com a classificação do Samuel Pupo, que ele vê surfar desde criança. "É muito bom estrear em casa com vitória, ainda mais passando junto com o Samuel (Pupo), um moleque que a gente sempre surfou junto e é como se fosse da minha família. O mar está um pouco difícil e eu tive que ir pros aéreos. É a manobra que dá mais nota e Graças a Deus funcionou. Espero que o mar aumente, como a previsão está indicando, para a gente pegar uns tubos aqui nos próximos dias".

TÍTULO MUNDIAL - Na disputa seguinte, outro dos três brasileiros que vão brigar pelo título mundial da temporada no Havaí, Adriano de Souza, se classificou em segundo lugar na bateria vencida pelo norte-americano Tanner Gudauskas. "Este ano está sendo um sonho para nós, brasileiros. Dez anos atrás, quando entrei no Tour, a gente lutava só para entrar nos top-5 e agora somos três lutando pelo título mundial. Acho que melhoramos muito e é isso que os fãs brasileiros sempre quiseram. Estou feliz por estar participando deste grande evento aqui, mas meu foco principal é conseguir meu primeiro título mundial no Havaí".
Já o defensor do título do Oi HD São Paulo Open of Surfing e atual vice-líder na corrida pelo título mundial, Filipe Toledo, só estreou na bateria que fechou a primeira fase. Ele enfrentou os dois portugueses que brilharam na etapa do CT vencida por ele em Supertubos na sexta-feira passada, encerrada com uma final brasileira contra Italo Ferreira em Cascais. O semifinalista em Portugal, Vasco Ribeiro, estava se classificando até o último minuto, quando Messias Felix arriscou um aéreo sensacional e ainda acertou outras manobras para conquistar a última vaga para a segunda fase. Vasco acabou eliminado junto com Frederico Morais.

"Eu gosto de arriscar as manobras e sempre surfo minhas ondas como se fossem a última da bateria", disse Filipe Toledo, que completou vários aéreos principalmente nas direitas de Maresias e, assim como Medina, passou um tempão dando autógrafos e tirando fotos com a torcida que compareceu em peso para assistir as estrelas do surfe brasileiro e mundial na Praia de Maresias. "Estou bem tranquilo aqui, curtindo bastante em estar participando desse evento que eu venci no ano passado e muito confiante para buscar outro bom resultado. Estou me sentindo bem mais relaxado depois da vitória em Portugal e agora já me preparando para lutar pelo título mundial lá em Pipeline. Eu me sinto abençoado por tudo o que está acontecendo comigo esse ano".
VAGAS NO CT - Além da estreia das principais atrações do Oi HD São Paulo Open of Surfing, a batalha pelas quatro últimas vagas do Qualifying Series para a elite dos top-34 da World Surf League também centralizou as atenções na quarta-feira. Em todas as quinze baterias que faltavam para fechar a primeira fase, tinham um ou dois competidores com chances de entrar na zona de classificação para o CT. Foram 27 no total e apenas treze avançaram para a segunda fase, com quatorze adiando o sonho de fazer parte do grupo dos melhores surfistas do mundo para as duas últimas etapas do QS 10000 que vão abrir a Tríplice Coroa Havaiana.
A segunda fase foi iniciada ainda na tarde da quarta-feira, com as quatro primeiras baterias fechando o terceiro dia do Oi HD São Paulo Open of Surfing. Mais oito concorrentes por vagas no CT competiram, com quatro deles se enfrentando na segunda bateria. O recordista da terça-feira, Sebastian Zietz, foi barrado junto com o australiano Soli Bailey, que entraria no G-10 se passasse para a terceira fase. Agora quem está mais próximo da zona de classificação é o norte-americano Conner Coffin, que venceu a bateria com o taitiano Mateia Hiquily se classificando em segundo lugar. Já no último confronto do dia, caiu um dos sete integrantes da seleção brasileira do CT, Wiggolly Dantas, na dobradinha catarinense de Tomas Hermes com Willian Cardoso, que arrancou a maior nota do campeonato, 9,40, para passar em primeiro.

Com os resultados dessas quatro baterias, dezenove surfistas seguem com chances matemáticas de entrar no G-10 do Qualifying Series em São Sebastião, os brasileiros Michael Rodrigues (CE), Jessé Mendes (SP), Bino Lopes (BA), Hizunomê Bettero (SP) e Tomas Hermes (SC), os americanos Conner Coffin, Nathan Yeomans, Tanner Gudauskas e Michael Dunphy, os australianos Davey Cathels, Mich Coleborn, Cooper Chapman e Yadin Nicol, os havaianos Tanner Hendrickson e Ezekiel Lau, os costa-ricenses Carlos Munoz e Noe Mar McGonagle, o sul-africano Beyrick De Vries e o taitiano Mateia Hiquily.
High Scores and Early Exits at the Oi HD Sao Paulo Open
CT surfers show off their prowess at the World Surf League QS 10,000 event at Praia de Maresias, in Sao Sebastiao, Brazil.
Light onshore winds and waves in the 3-5 foot range (1-1.5 meters) were on hand at Praia de Maresias as competition rolled through 19 heats on Wednesday at the Oi HD Sao Paulo Open of Surfing, presented by Banco do Brasil. Thrilling heats, high scores, come-from-behind victories and stunning upsets all took place at the final QS 10,000 event of the 2015 WSL South America Surf Series.
Arriving in Brazil after an incredible performance at the Moche Rip Curl Pro in Portugal, Italo Ferreira (BRA) continued his impressive abilities in the water as he displayed a skillful rail-game and boosted air after air to earn an 8.00 and a 9.33 for the highest heat total of the event, a 17.33. Ferreira advanced directly into Round 2 alongside Nathan Hedge (AUS) who finished in second place over Australian Brent Dorrington and the 2015 WSL South American Champion: Robson Santos (BRA).
"I'm surfing really relaxed and without any pressure," Ferreira said. "I found some good waves in my heat and I hope to maintain my rhythm until the Final. The wind is making it easy to go for airs on the ramps on the lefts, so that's what I tried to do and it worked out."
In addition to Ferreira's 9.33 ride, other rides in the excellent range were provided by Willian Cardoso (BRA - 9.40), Noe Mar McGonagle (CRI - 9.37), Marc Lacomare (FRA - 9.33), Filipe Toledo (BRA - 9.00), Mateia Hiquily (PYF - 8.93) and Gabriel Medina (BRA - 8.77).
The crowd watching from the sand at Maresias would start buzzing every time one of the seven Brazilian CT surfers competing at the Oi HD Sao Paulo Open of Surfing would make their way out to the Competition Area. The beach would erupt with every huge air made and high score obtained from their favorite athletes.
Current 2015 WSL World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) grew up surfing the barreling waves at Maresias and is a hometown hero. Facing him were Mitch Crews (AUS), Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) and Samuel Pupo (BRA), Event Trials Winner and younger brother of CT surfer Miguel Pupo, representing the latest generation of talented surfers from the coast of Sao Sebastiao.
Pupo got off to a quick lead and posted a 7.80 on a nifty air reverse, followed by a 6.53 for a 14.33 total. Crews and Boukhiam both added mid-range scores and left Medina looking for big scores. After earning a 6.17 for several tight wraps on his forehand, Medina blasted a huge frontside air with additional maneuvers down the line for his best score, an 8.77, edging out Pupo who advanced in second, to the delight of the spectators in Maresias.
"It's great to start off winning your first heat at home. And I'm also happy that Samuel (Pupo) advanced," said Medina. "We're always surfing together and I feel like he's family. The conditions are a little difficult and I felt like I had to go for the airs because they've been getting high scores. I hope the waves get bigger, just like forecast is showing, so we can get some barrels in the next few days.
Following Medina's come-from-behind win, current No. 3 on the Championship Tour, Adriano de Souza (BRA) hit the water against Tanner Gudauskas (USA), Aritz Aranburu (ESP) and Caetano Vargas (BRA) in Heat 13 of Round 1.
Gudauskas put everyone in his heat in combination after getting a 14.93 for precise and explosive surfing on his first two rides. Known for his determination in the water, De Souza clawed back and earned a 7.10 and a 6.07 for a 13.17 total and advanced in second place behind Gudauskas. Both Aranburu and Vargas were eliminated from competition.
"I feel great. This is an amazing opportunity for me to compete in a contest in my state (Sao Paulo)," said De Souza. "Last year I was injured and I couldn't make it. It's amazing timing for me too to make some heats and get ready for Haleiwa. We do a lot of preparation physically and mentally before each event and it's great to have the support of my family that is here."
When asked about his view as the veteran Brazilian on Tour and the current situation of Brazilians at the top of the ranking:
"It's a dream come true," continued De Souza. "When I got on Tour 10 years ago, we were fighting just to make it into the Top 5 and now we're fighting for the World Title. We've improved a lot and I think it's something that the Brazilian fans have always wanted. But once you do make it to the top, the Brazilians want you to stay there forever (laughs). So that's my focus and I'm working hard to get my first Title."
In Heat 18 of Round 1, Kanoa Igarashi (USA), the newest rookie to make it onto the 2016 Championship Tour continued his scorching performance on the Brazilian leg of QS events by winning his opening heat at the Oi HD Sao Paulo Open of Surfing. Mitch Coleborn (AUS) advanced in second, eliminating Gonzalo Zubizarreta (ESP) and Miguel Tudela (PER).
"My strategy going into that heat was to surf solid with mostly maneuvers. My goal was to get two big turns on my backhand. That's what's been scoring the best today on the lefts. I just made sure I found the waves that would let me do that," said Igarashi who began the Brazilian leg with a Semifinal result at the QS 6000 in Florianopolis and a victory at the QS 6000 in Itacare which guaranteed his qualification onto the CT in 2016.
"This has been the most important leg of my life," continued Igarashi. "I really wasn't expecting to do this good here and there's still a lot to do. I arrived here with a bunch of my friends from back home and we just had fun, and since I wasn't thinking about the points, I got some great results out of it. Now I'm in the last event here and there's no more pressure, so it couldn't be better."
At last year's QS 10,000 event in Maresias, Filipe Toledo (BRA) looked unstoppable and ended up winning the biggest event of his career at the time. One year later, and with three CT event wins under his belt (Gold Coast, Rio and Portugal), Toledo currently sits at No. 2 on the CT rankings and is heading to Pipeline in search of his first World Title. But before that, Toledo is looking to defend his title in Maresias while enjoying being surrounded by friends and family.
In Heat 24 of Round 1, Toledo, who just won the CT event in Portugal, was coincidentally matched up against Vasco Ribeiro (PRT) and Frederico Morais (PRT), the Portuguese Event Wildcards that threw a wrench in the Title Race by taking down several top surfers. Rounding out the group was Messias Felix (BRA), who entered the contest as an Injury Replacement.
Toledo immediately went to the air but wasn't able to complete the maneuver. On his second ride, he stuck to the face and earned a 6.77 on a series of backhand snaps on a lefthander. As soon as he made it back to the line-up, Toledo attempted another air, landing a massive full rotation in the flats for a 9-point ride. Toledo seems to always have a killer instinct in competition despite his up-tempo and stress-free attitude.
"Yeah it's true, I just want to surf my wave as if it's my last one," said Toledo. "I'm enjoying my time at home, I'm feeling super comfortable and very confident for this contest. I feel really relaxed after a big win in Portugal and now I'm going after the World Title in Hawaii. I'm super happy, I'm enjoying everything and I feel like I'm so blessed."
Both Portuguese surfers fought for second place with good scores in the 7-point range, but on his last wave, Felix went ballistic and combined a series major maneuvers for an 8.70, advancing in second place and eliminating Ribeiro and Morais.

High Scores and Early Exits at the Oi HD Sao Paulo Open
CT surfers show off their prowess at the World Surf League QS 10,000 event at Praia de Maresias, in Sao Sebastiao, Brazil.
Light onshore winds and waves in the 3-5 foot range (1-1.5 meters) were on hand at Praia de Maresias as competition rolled through 19 heats on Wednesday at the Oi HD Sao Paulo Open of Surfing, presented by Banco do Brasil. Thrilling heats, high scores, come-from-behind victories and stunning upsets all took place at the final QS 10,000 event of the 2015 WSL South America Surf Series.
Arriving in Brazil after an incredible performance at the Moche Rip Curl Pro in Portugal, Italo Ferreira (BRA) continued his impressive abilities in the water as he displayed a skillful rail-game and boosted air after air to earn an 8.00 and a 9.33 for the highest heat total of the event, a 17.33. Ferreira advanced directly into Round 2 alongside Nathan Hedge (AUS) who finished in second place over Australian Brent Dorrington and the 2015 WSL South American Champion: Robson Santos (BRA).
"I'm surfing really relaxed and without any pressure," Ferreira said. "I found some good waves in my heat and I hope to maintain my rhythm until the Final. The wind is making it easy to go for airs on the ramps on the lefts, so that's what I tried to do and it worked out."
In addition to Ferreira's 9.33 ride, other rides in the excellent range were provided by Willian Cardoso (BRA - 9.40), Noe Mar McGonagle (CRI - 9.37), Marc Lacomare (FRA - 9.33), Filipe Toledo (BRA - 9.00), Mateia Hiquily (PYF - 8.93) and Gabriel Medina (BRA - 8.77).
The crowd watching from the sand at Maresias would start buzzing every time one of the seven Brazilian CT surfers competing at the Oi HD Sao Paulo Open of Surfing would make their way out to the Competition Area. The beach would erupt with every huge air made and high score obtained from their favorite athletes.
Current 2015 WSL World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) grew up surfing the barreling waves at Maresias and is a hometown hero. Facing him were Mitch Crews (AUS), Ramzi Boukhiam (MAR) and Samuel Pupo (BRA), Event Trials Winner and younger brother of CT surfer Miguel Pupo, representing the latest generation of talented surfers from the coast of Sao Sebastiao.
Pupo got off to a quick lead and posted a 7.80 on a nifty air reverse, followed by a 6.53 for a 14.33 total. Crews and Boukhiam both added mid-range scores and left Medina looking for big scores. After earning a 6.17 for several tight wraps on his forehand, Medina blasted a huge frontside air with additional maneuvers down the line for his best score, an 8.77, edging out Pupo who advanced in second, to the delight of the spectators in Maresias.
"It's great to start off winning your first heat at home. And I'm also happy that Samuel (Pupo) advanced," said Medina. "We're always surfing together and I feel like he's family. The conditions are a little difficult and I felt like I had to go for the airs because they've been getting high scores. I hope the waves get bigger, just like forecast is showing, so we can get some barrels in the next few days.
Following Medina's come-from-behind win, current No. 3 on the Championship Tour, Adriano de Souza (BRA) hit the water against Tanner Gudauskas (USA), Aritz Aranburu (ESP) and Caetano Vargas (BRA) in Heat 13 of Round 1.
Gudauskas put everyone in his heat in combination after getting a 14.93 for precise and explosive surfing on his first two rides. Known for his determination in the water, De Souza clawed back and earned a 7.10 and a 6.07 for a 13.17 total and advanced in second place behind Gudauskas. Both Aranburu and Vargas were eliminated from competition.
"I feel great. This is an amazing opportunity for me to compete in a contest in my state (Sao Paulo)," said De Souza. "Last year I was injured and I couldn't make it. It's amazing timing for me too to make some heats and get ready for Haleiwa. We do a lot of preparation physically and mentally before each event and it's great to have the support of my family that is here."
When asked about his view as the veteran Brazilian on Tour and the current situation of Brazilians at the top of the ranking:
"It's a dream come true," continued De Souza. "When I got on Tour 10 years ago, we were fighting just to make it into the Top 5 and now we're fighting for the World Title. We've improved a lot and I think it's something that the Brazilian fans have always wanted. But once you do make it to the top, the Brazilians want you to stay there forever (laughs). So that's my focus and I'm working hard to get my first Title."
In Heat 18 of Round 1, Kanoa Igarashi (USA), the newest rookie to make it onto the 2016 Championship Tour continued his scorching performance on the Brazilian leg of QS events by winning his opening heat at the Oi HD Sao Paulo Open of Surfing. Mitch Coleborn (AUS) advanced in second, eliminating Gonzalo Zubizarreta (ESP) and Miguel Tudela (PER).
"My strategy going into that heat was to surf solid with mostly maneuvers. My goal was to get two big turns on my backhand. That's what's been scoring the best today on the lefts. I just made sure I found the waves that would let me do that," said Igarashi who began the Brazilian leg with a Semifinal result at the QS 6000 in Florianopolis and a victory at the QS 6000 in Itacare which guaranteed his qualification onto the CT in 2016.
"This has been the most important leg of my life," continued Igarashi. "I really wasn't expecting to do this good here and there's still a lot to do. I arrived here with a bunch of my friends from back home and we just had fun, and since I wasn't thinking about the points, I got some great results out of it. Now I'm in the last event here and there's no more pressure, so it couldn't be better."
At last year's QS 10,000 event in Maresias, Filipe Toledo (BRA) looked unstoppable and ended up winning the biggest event of his career at the time. One year later, and with three CT event wins under his belt (Gold Coast, Rio and Portugal), Toledo currently sits at No. 2 on the CT rankings and is heading to Pipeline in search of his first World Title. But before that, Toledo is looking to defend his title in Maresias while enjoying being surrounded by friends and family.
In Heat 24 of Round 1, Toledo, who just won the CT event in Portugal, was coincidentally matched up against Vasco Ribeiro (PRT) and Frederico Morais (PRT), the Portuguese Event Wildcards that threw a wrench in the Title Race by taking down several top surfers. Rounding out the group was Messias Felix (BRA), who entered the contest as an Injury Replacement.
Toledo immediately went to the air but wasn't able to complete the maneuver. On his second ride, he stuck to the face and earned a 6.77 on a series of backhand snaps on a lefthander. As soon as he made it back to the line-up, Toledo attempted another air, landing a massive full rotation in the flats for a 9-point ride. Toledo seems to always have a killer instinct in competition despite his up-tempo and stress-free attitude.
"Yeah it's true, I just want to surf my wave as if it's my last one," said Toledo. "I'm enjoying my time at home, I'm feeling super comfortable and very confident for this contest. I feel really relaxed after a big win in Portugal and now I'm going after the World Title in Hawaii. I'm super happy, I'm enjoying everything and I feel like I'm so blessed."
Both Portuguese surfers fought for second place with good scores in the 7-point range, but on his last wave, Felix went ballistic and combined a series major maneuvers for an 8.70, advancing in second place and eliminating Ribeiro and Morais.
