This September, the World Surf League will return to one of the most iconic surf spots on the planet, Lagundri Bay on the Island of Nias for the second annual Nias Pro, men's and women's combined QS1,500 events. The event will play as the first of two QS events in the Asia region through September and October, running from September 9 to 14.

In 2018, WSL Asia returned to Nias for the first time in 20 years with Balinese prodigy Ketut Agus and Vittoria Farmer taking the win in flawless four-to-six foot barrels. In 2019, the event is back and is expected to be even bigger having been upgraded to a QS1,500 (with the potential to go to 3000 in the coming weeks), meaning there are more points and prize money on the line and a bigger more international field expected, something WSL Asia Regional Manager Steve Robertson is thrilled about.

"WSL Asia is proud to work closely with Tipi Jabrik and Tim Hain from ASC to deliver this epic event," Robertson said. "We had an amazing event last year and everyone is so looking forward to Nias again. Personally, I believe this is all round the best contest wave in the world - so consistent, so perfect and simply an amazing point break that offers the lot!"

Having competed in a WSL event at Nias almost 20-years ago in the year 2000 and then acting as the Contest Director in 2018, Asian Surfing Cooperative Director Tipi Jabrik is proud to see the growth of an event at one of the jewels in the crown of the Indonesian archipelago.

"Nias is one of the most iconic waves in surfing," Jabrik said. "To have a consistent international surfing event there gives the area incredible exposure for surf tourism but most of all give Indonesian surfers an opportunity to surf against an international field and gain QS rankings points. Not to mention the fact that it is one of the most perfect waves on the planet and competitors will have the opportunity to surf it with only a couple of others out."

Stay tuned for more news in the coming weeks about more events taking place in the Asia region in the weeks following the Nias Pro.

The 2019 Nias Pro men's and women's QS1,500 will run from September 9 - 14. The event will be broadcast live at www.worldsurfleague.com and on the free WSL App. Head to these places for more information.
