Tiago Pires (PRT) winning the opening heat of Round 1 at the Billabong Rio Pro.
Gabriel Medina (BRA) of Maresias sported the World No. 1 yellow jersey as he launched his way to a Round 3 advancement.
Building on his momentum from Bells, Taj Burrow took Heat 3 with his classic progressive style.
Joel Parkinson (AUS) executed solid carves on back-to-back waves to defeat Jeremy Flores (FRA) and Glenn Hall (IRL).
Rookie Mitch Crews (AUS) upset 11-time World Champion Kelly Slater (USA) to advance directly to Round 3.
Slater struggled to find a sizable wave he could turn into a big score.
Kolohe Andino (USA) kept busy, posting 15 scores on his way to a Round 1 victory.
Wildcard entry David do Carmo was able to outscore WCT No. 3 Mick Fanning (AUS) but ultimately fell short of Andino's top scores.
Josh Kerr (AUS) caught huge air for a heat-high 8.50.
Defending event champion Jordy Smith (ZAF) continues to succeed in Rio.
The best ride of the day and one of the best totals on the Tour this season came from Filipe Toledo (BRA) who maximized his air game for a combined score of 18.30.
Nat Young (USA) used his air game to earn a direct advance to Round 3.
Jadson Andre (BRA) upset Top 17 contenders Michel Bourez (PYF) and Owen Wright (AUS) to win a direct line to Round 3.
Wright needed a 5.87 to reclaim the lead but the surf leveled off before he could find one.
John John Florence (HAW) had a busy heat, scoring on 13 waves and claiming victory over C.J. Hobgood (USA) and Matt Wilkinson (AUS).
