Championship Tour athlete and French Olympic team member, Johanne Defay, reigned victorious at the Federation Cup in Hossegor, France, on July 7, 2020. The Federation Cup, organized by the French Surfing Federation, brought together the top 20 surfers from French territories around the world, including Tahiti and Reunion Island.
"It was so fun to feel the contest vibes and to put the jersey back on," Defay wrote, sharing her victory on Instagram.
Of the eight women surfers, Johanne Defay, Pauline Ado, Vahine Fierro, and Justine Dupont put on an exciting final. Defay lead the finals with a 7.83.
The contest, which took place at Le Culs Nus, Hossegor, featured a live broadcast on Facebook and YouTube for fans to watch from the safety of their homes. And not only did it give the surfers a chance to get back in the jersey, but the opportunity to win 10,000 Euros in prize money as well.
"For the surfers, it's an important moment to be able to resume competition. They need to surf in competition to be at the top level. They are all very happy to have been able to put the jersey back on," said President of the French Surfing Federation Jean-Luc Arassus on the federation's official website.
The Federation Cup is not the first example of surfers itching to get back in a jersey. At the end of June, Frederico Morais won the Allianz Figueira Pro.
And recently CT stars Sally Fitzgibbons and Lakey Peterson recently sparred in some mock heats Australia. Kolohe Andino, Griffin Colapinto and friends have also been running sparring sessions, battling it out for fun and bragging rights at their local beachbreak in California.
