Excellent Conditions Forecast for Start of 17th Whalebone Classic

Conditions for West Australia's leading longboard surfing event, the Whalebone Classic look to be shaping up for an excellent weekend of surfing. Forecasters are predicting sunshine and surf for the opening rounds at Iso's reef at Cottesloe on Friday with conditions expected to continue during the three day event.
This year's event boasts men's and women's ASP Longboard Qualifying Series (LQS) 2-Star rated divisions as well an array of amateur divisions from U16 to Over 60s. A large local crowd will be on hand to witness former Australian champion, Justin Redman from Yallingup, WA back in competition after his impressive performance at the last event in Avalon a few weeks ago. One of Cottesloe's favourite sons Jock Bahen will also be one to watch as he knows the waves at Iso's better than anyone. Nic Jones, Heith Norrish, Nick Farago and Jack Entwistle will lead the eastern states charge for the two qualifying spots that are up for grabs for the ASP World Longboard Championships in 2015.
"I'm excited for the event, I hear there's some good waves and good swell," said Whalebone Classic men's No. 1 seed Nic Jones. "I'm looking forward to kicking it off and having fun with all the boys. I've had a good run in events recently with a few runner-up finishes to Taylor Jensen. It's been a big goal to consistently make the finals, I put it down to training and coaching and I hope I can keep it up. There's heaps of great surfers and surf breaks over here in WA, it's so different to the east coast I really love it."
Defending Whalebone women's champion, and 9th place finisher at the ASP World Longboard Championships last year Georgia Young will return to defend her title in the ASP LQS division. The women's field will also feature Sam Vanderford, youngster Michaela Ross, Erin Dark, Roisin Carolan and Hawaii's Tehani Hinkley and Katie Jones.
