About Bettylou Sakura Johnson

Most 15-year-old surfers would be shaking in their sandals if they were given a wildcard into one of the most prestigious events on the Women’s Championship Tour. Bettylou Sakura Johnson, however, isn't like most 15-year-old surfers. She took full advantage of her opportunity to mix it up with the world’s best women at the 2021 Maui Pro presented by Roxy at Pipeline. Bettylou proved she has what it takes to hold her own in serious waves against serious competition earning an equal 9th place and major respect.

But if you think her success in the Maui Pro was a fluke, you are certainly mistaken. At a mere 15 years old, the Honolulu-native has already racked up an impressive set of wins. In 2020 she captured double 1st place results at the Papara Pro Junior Tahiti and the Papara Pro Open Tahiti, as well as winning the Queen in Me, an online video submission contest where she was chosen as the best female surfer by a select group of judges. In the clips for Queen in Me, she showcases her immaculate style with a wonderful combination of barrel rides, power turns, and fins-free surfing.

It’s easy to understand why Bettylou Sakura Johnson is looked at as one of the next big things, not only coming out of Hawaii but also in the world of women’s professional surfing. Based on her competitive prowess and ability to push her surfing to the limits, we don’t think it’ll be very long before she’s gracing the upper ranks of the Women’s Championship Tour.
