O Billabong Pro Junior San Bartolo vai abrir as seletivas sul-americanas da WSL South America para o Mundial Pro Junior da World Surf League no Peru. A cidade de San Bartolo fica cerca de 100 Km ao sul da capital Lima e vem se tornando o grande palco da categoria na América do Sul. No ano passado, sediou duas das três etapas disputadas no continente e o próximo desafio para a nova geração está confirmado para os dias 5 a 7 de maio. A grande novidade é o limite de idade para a categoria, que a World Surf League baixou de 20 para 18 anos a partir de 2016.
O evento deste ano também marca a volta da Billabong para a categoria Pro Junior que ela mesma iniciou, promovendo os campeonatos que decidiram os primeiros campeões mundiais da história da World Surf League. O primeiro foi o já falecido havaiano Andy Irons em 1998, seguido pelo australiano Joel Parkinson em 1999 e o brasileiro Pedro Henrique em 2000, nas três edições disputadas no Havaí. Depois a competição mudou para a Austrália e continuou definindo os melhores surfistas do mundo com até 20 anos de idade por muitos anos.
Deivid Silva (BRA) - WSL
O Brasil é recordista de títulos mundiais Pro Junior, com sete conquistas nas dezessete edições completadas com o carioca Lucas Silveira sendo o campeão de 2015 no início deste ano em Portugal. Depois de Pedro Henrique, que agora disputa o Circuito Mundial representando Portugal, onde mora há vários anos, o hoje campeão mundial da World Surf League, Adriano de Souza, foi o primeiro brasileiro a vencer na Austrália, em 2003.
O cearense Pablo Paulino repetiu o feito em 2004 e ainda foi bicampeão em 2007. O paulista Caio Ibelli também ganhou na Austrália o caneco de 2011 e o campeão mundial Gabriel Medina faturou o título na única edição realizada no Brasil, o HD World Junior Championship de 2013 na Praia da Joaquina, em Florianópolis (SC).

Na América do Sul, a Billabong também foi pioneira na categoria Pro Junior e retorna agora no Billabong Pro Junior San Bartolo do Peru. No ano passado, o brasileiro Deivid Silva e a peruana Miluska Tello venceram esta primeira etapa e terminaram a temporada como bicampeões sul-americanos Pro Junior da WSL South America. Ambos já não teriam mais idade para competir, ainda mais com o novo limite de 18 anos.
Na outra etapa do ano passado em San Bartolo, que definiu o time sul-americano para o Mundial Pro Junior de 2015, Miluska Tello foi finalista de novo, mas perdeu a decisão para a também peruana Melanie Giunta. Já Deivid Silva não competiu nessa prova, porém deu Brasil no alto do pódio mais uma vez, com o catarinense Alcides Lopes derrotando o peruano Alonso Correa na grande final do Maui and Sons Pro Junior San Bartolo.

Lucas Silveira surfou de forma incrível nas direitas de Ribeira D´Ilhas para derrotar todos os adversários que cruzaram seu caminho, rumo ao sétimo título mundial do Brasil na última competição da categoria para surfistas com até 20 anos de idade.
INSCRIÇÕES ABERTAS - Com o limite baixando para 18 anos, novos nomes vão iniciar a disputa pelas vagas para o Mundial da WSL no Billabong Pro Junior San Bartolo. As inscrições ainda estão abertas pelo sistema online do www.wslsouthamerica.com e os brasileiros são maioria entre os que já confirmaram participação até o momento. Outros países, como Peru, Argentina, Uruguai, Chile e Equador, também estarão representados na primeira seletiva sul-americana da WSL South America no Peru.

The jetty of San Bartolo south of Peru's capital, Lima, has become a platform for the World Surf League Pro Junior Series in South America. Last year, two out of the three events carried out in South America were held in San Bartolo. Once again, the continent's best young surfers will be represented at the 2016 Billabong Pro Junior San Bartolo from May 5-7. Beginning this year, new rules implemented by the WSL have had a huge impact on competitors in all Pro Junior events worldwide as the age limit has dropped from 20 to 18 years of age.
Returning as event sponsor is Billabong, which introduced the first WSL Junior Titles, including legends such as Andy Irons (HAW) in 1998, Joel Parkinson (AUS) in 1999 and Pedro Henrique (BRA) in 2000, all held in Hawaii. Afterwards, the contest moved to Australia, where the world's best 20-and-under surfers were crowned.

Winning seven out of the seventeen events, Brazil maintains the lead for the most WSL Pro Junior Titles. After the first victory by Henrique, who now competes under the Portuguese flag, current WSL World Champion Adriano de Souza (BRA) was the next Brazilian to earn the prestigious title.
Following their lead, Pablo Paulino (BRA) won in 2004 and again in 2007. Current CT rookie Caio Ibelli (BRA) triumphed in 2011, and former World Champion Gabriel Medina (BRA) took out the title in 2013 at the HD World Junior Championship at Praia da Joaquina in Florianopolis (Santa Catarina), the only event held in Brazil. In 2015, Lucas Silveira (BRA) was the last to clinch the crown at the contest held in Ribeira D'Ilhas Portugal.
The Pro Junior events in San Bartolo have been decisive in exhibiting the highest level of surfing coming out of South America. Last year, Deivid Silva (BRA) and Miluska Tello (PER) both won their respective categories and took top honors to become two-time WSL South America Pro Junior Champions.
