The top World Surf League South America Men's and Women's Junior Tour athletes will converge at the river mouth at Guarda do Embaú for the RDS Pro Junior, an event produced by Adriano de Souza (BRA), Yago Dora (BRA) and Lucas Silveira (BRA) to honor their close friend, Ricardo dos Santos, who was tragically killed in front of his house by an off-duty police officer in 2015.

The contest begins on Friday, October 13 and the champions will be crowned on Sunday. Last year, the titles were decided in Peru. The Men's division was won by Weslley Dantas (BRA), but this year he will not be able to defend his title after surpassing the 18-and-under age limit. However, in the Women's division, 14-year old Tainá Hinckel (BRA) will try to become the two-time continental champion. Hinckel is a local at Guarda do Embaú and was encouraged by Ricardinho to invest in a career as a professional surfer.
"I've been having a really great year," said Hinckel. "I competed at the CT event (Oi Rio Pro in Saquarema) for the first time and I also made it to the Finals at the ISA World Championship in Japan. My goal now is to qualify and compete at the WSL Junior Tour Championship. It won't be easy because all the girls will be surfing their hardest, but I'll be competing at home and I've surfed this spot more than anyone."

In the Men's division, the list of heavy hitters includes the likes of: Mateus Herdy (BRA), Samuel Pupo (BRA), Lucas Vicente (BRA), João Chianca (BRA), José Gundesen (ARG), Gustavo Dylan (CHL) and Jhonny Guerrero (PER).
In addition to vying for the 2017 WSL South America Junior Tour Titles, the top two women and top four men will be representing South America at the WSL Junior Tour Championship in Kiama, New South Wales, Australia.
