But once people started flocking to the island, they found its rich culture, friendly people, and multitude of world-class waves make it a mandatory stop on every surfer's list.

The Vault: 2008 Rip Curl Pro Search Bali
Athletes didn't know event location beforehand and the first round was held at Padang Padang then moved right around the Bukit to Uluwatu. Bruce Irons won the event with classic barrel prowess in an all-Hawaiian Final against Freddy Patacchia.

Italo Ferreira won the event after beating Michel Bourez in the Final. On the women's side, Lakey Peterson took down Tyler Wright, eventually finishing runner-up this year.
