'Made In: The Basque Country' is a three-part series focusing on the unique surf scene and culture of the Basque Country of Spain. Through the eyes of big-wave surfer Natxo Gonzalez and the lens of filmmaker Jon Aspuru we get to explore its epic waves and unique history.
The third and final installment traces Natxo's Big Wave Tour (BTW) competitive success which started with a win at the Punta Galea event when he was only 17.
That victory earned him a wildcard into the 2016 Punta de Lobos event, making him the youngest surfer to compete in a BWT event. A few years later he made more history by riding a perfect 10-point ride at the 2018 Nazare Challenge.
In this episode Grant "Twiggy" Baker also makes a guest appearance. The 3X Big Wave World Champion is a regular in the Basque big wave line-ups, having formed a deep connection with the waves and the people over the last few years. In the episode he travels from South Africa as part of long quest to score the wave of Roca Puta.
The European earns the first perfect 10 of the Big Wave season for a barrel in the Semifinals of the Nazaré Challange.
However it is the footage of a wave simply known as "The Slab" that provides a dramatic climax to the series. Natxo and his tow partner Adrian Fernandez, along with a select group of Basque chargers, had long planned to surf a secret, shallow left as big as it can handle.
They luck, if that is the right word, into a harrowing session at their latest big wave obsession. Despite a few beatings they come out pumped to push their boundaries and prove that the surf exploration of the Basque Country is far from over.
